Explorer-class Scout

Overview

The Explorer is a long range exploration ship converted from surplus Type C Broadsword hulls. The ship was originally built for private contractors working for the Scout Service, but eventually made its way into the hands of a number of different institutional owners. The ship is not as powerful a survey or recon craft as the Donosev Survey Ship, but it does have better small craft and cargo carrying capabilities, and carries several laboratories to boot. The Broadsword's EMM suite is retained in unison with several powerful sensors, and eight 210 MJ remote laser turrets. To protect against radiation bursts and battle damage, the ships computers are military grade fiber optic backups. Two fifty ton survey/science cutters are carried in docking rings, and the massive cargo bay can be converted over to ground and grav vehicles if needed.

The internal arrangement of the Explorer is substantially different than the Broadsword. The centrally located bridge and crew staterooms are retained, but the forward part of the ship now contains the labs and supplemental electronics. The spare module space and ATV hangars have been filled with more cargo space. In addition, the hold is designed for modular adaptation, allowing for customization of the space with sickbays or additional accommodations or vehicle hangars. The exploratory cutters reside in the same place as the original design, though additional plumbing allows for fuel transfers between them and the mother ship. Space, which always seems a premium on the Broadsword because of its fishbowl like design, becomes alleviated somewhat due to additional partitions and containment bulkheads between the main crew compartment and the lab section.

The Explorer was originally designed for Adventure Ships 2 by J. Andrew Keith. Adapted from CT stats provided courtesy of Chris Keelan.
