Jeff Zeitlin, our host.

Jeff smiles for the camera. He's wearing the Imperial Starburst has as our IFF signal to Brian Hurrel, who had not shown up yet. I tried calling him a couple times and left a message as to our location on his answering machine - which he later said sounded a little odd to his wife ("Hi, this Rob with the TML - we're in Tír na nÓg off to the left when you get here - and don't worry we've only ordered the drinks so far." That doesn't sound weird does it?)

The discussion was plentiful - Thomas Sowell's "Conquests and Cultures" and Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steel" and then to the rise of the Vilani on Vland, the ways a central cultural area explained things there, Jeff's T:5641 project, stealthy ships and the Heat Problem, language drift, the evolution of Anglic, the effect of recording media (we can read Shakespeare's plays, but Strephon could probably see Hiroshi I giving speeches), the usefulness of information-only glyphs in a language (Chinese - Cantonese and Mandarin can each read the same writing but can't understand each other's speech).
