From the Editor

The Traveller conventions on both sides of ‘the pond’ have come and gone, and as usual, fun was had and after-action reports presented. It’s always interesting to see the AARs from the convention on the ‘other’ side; although both have the same basic purpose, it’s clear that they’ve grown differently, and have different characters. Someday, I’d like to have the chance to visit TravCon (UK) and meet some of the people who have played a big part in those conventions – and I’d like for some of them to come here to meet some of the people that play big parts in TravellerCON/USA.

Traveller itself is approaching the fiftieth anniversary of its first release, and while it never developed a following like TSR’s offering, it’s seen steady growth and a solid fan base that has produced quite a bit of material. If nothing else, five-and-a-half thousand pages of Freelance Traveller can attest to that…

What’s more, every publisher of Traveller has encouraged fanac, and some of the people who started in fanac have gone on to actually make (at least beer-and-pretzel) money from their love of Traveller. I approve. Even when it costs me a source of material, like Michael Brown. But I’d like to encourage others to write for Freelance Traveller. “New blood” is always a good thing, and it’s a creative outlet that might just work for you – Freelance Traveller itself was a way for me to be involved with Traveller when I couldn’t get a group together to play, and I never expected it to grow as it did. Nor did I expect it to grow the community as it did. Don’t worry if you “can’t write”, because you can get help with that, whether from me, or from teachers, writers, librarians, or other such people near you. Even writing clubs and book clubs might well be helpful. And it really does feel good when you get to see your name in print on something that lots of other people read… So, come join the party!
